Um Hello! It is literally only 45 minutes away and the views are insane. So I will ask you again... Shall we hike Mt Macedon?
Written By Jacques
Well my first trip to Mt Macedon went a little something like this.. 3 kiwis, 1 Aussie and a rather whiny Italian. Don't take it the wrong way.. I love this guys and the whining provided some amazing entertainment during the hike. The hike itself is awesome, with a well maintained track and some awesome views. The best part is Mt Macedon is only about 45 mins from Melbourne!
The walk starts and ends at the Mount Macedon Hotel but the signage is pretty average. There are a few ways of getting onto the track. We ended up walking up Mt Macedon Road for about 4 kilometres and turned left onto the track just after Cameron Drive. You can also try hopping on the track earlier by taking a right onto Anzac road. You should connect with the track at roughly THIS POINT around 1.5 kilometres from the Hotel.
If you connect earlier you will get a gorgeous view of the lakes in the area, offering a nice easy stroll to begin the 18 KM walk. Once you connect at Cameron Drive the hike starts to get steep and it doesn't really let up until you reach the summit. So... prepare those jelly legs!
The walk takes you past some old burn sections giving you a reminder of how dangerous forrest fires can be in Australia. The scarred landscape was caused by the Ash Wednesday bushfires on February 16 1983. Within 12 hours over 180 bushfires fanned by winds upwards of 110 km/h caused widespread destruction across Victoria and South Australia. They became the deadliest bushfires in Australian history until the Black Saturday bushfires in 2009.
It also gives you a reminder of how resilient nature can be.. the growth since 1983 is amazing, to be honest unless you look it is hard to spot where the fires were.
Once you get to the summit you will be greeted by the masses who have opted to drive to the top. It is up to you but I prefer the adventure and feeling of getting out there as opposed to sitting on my ass and jumping out to snap a couple Insta pics. But hey each to their own hahaha.
The views at the summit are beautiful and the area offers a great opportunity for some well deserved lunch.
This is a loop track so be sure to continue following the loop instead of going back the same way. Besides if you keep following the loop you will get to see some Alpacas!
I really enjoyed Mt Macedon as a day trip, it is also a great spot for a dawn long boarding session! So if you are into your skating and want some smooth tarmac roads be sure to check the area out bright and early. Just be safe!
